Under the leadership of Artistic Director and founder, Maestro Tak-Ng Lai, Canadian Sinfonietta concerts have become reputed for their engaging and musically innovative programs, appealing to the vast and culturally diverse audiences reflecting the multi-cultural make-up of the Greater Toronto Area.
Through these past eleven years, the orchestra has devoted at least one concert per season to nurturing young talent, giving opportunities for young artists not only to solo with the orchestra, but also to play in the group as part of a continuing CS mentorship program.
The Orchestra's repertoire is comprised of a broad range of styles: from standard classical favorites, to world music focusing on a specific ethnic tradition. These 'cultural concerts' are a particular audience favorite and often feature ethnic instruments and arrangements of folk music for chamber orchestra. In addition, the Canadian Sinfonietta is committed to promoting the works of the composers of today. Canadian composer Michael Pepa presently serves as our composer in residence, and it is through his commissions and the works of other contemporary Canadian composers that we explore the masterworks of tomorrow.
In addition to a regular concert series the orchestra also performs with Toronto area choirs, takes part in community events such as multi-cultural celebrations, as well as charity fundraisers and has performed for prominent Canadian figures such as the former Governor-General Adrienne Clarkson, and Toronto Mayor, David Miller.
The Canadian Sinfonietta also enjoys a profile outside of Toronto through various touring initiatives throughout the Province of Ontario. Core members of the Orchestra form the Canadian Sinfonietta Chamber Players and frequently appear in regional festivals and series' throughout the Province, including such prestigious venues as the Kitchener-Waterloo Chamber Music Festival and the Canadian Opera Company Noontime Concert Series.
